Local-scale environmental gradients in ‘snail-shell’ stable isotopes from Holocene Jordanian archaeological sites

چکیده
Reconstructing environments around archaeological sites is complicated by past land management practices and regional-scale climate proxies that can be contradictory are often located at a distance from the themselves. Here we explore environmental information fossil snail shells which, even when few in number on an site, may prove invaluable constructing site-specific data. The palaeoecology of snails stable isotopic composition their shell carbonate provide context-specific vegetation, water availability, relative humidity during occupation site. We studied terrestrial aquatic two later Neolithic Jordanian badia, Wadi al-Qattafi Wisad Pools. At specific site-scale our study highlights importance reconstruction semi-arid environments. pools rare contexts dating between ~8.0 ~7.6 ka demonstrate episodes wetness; moreover, compositions indicate local watercourses were well established, corroborating previous findings this period immediate environs Pools host to C 3 plant species more typical Mediterranean zone. Moreover, δ 18 O signal these allow tentative rainwater identify effects evaporation. Soil phosphate stable oxygen isotopes across rainfall and bedrock gradients.
The stable oxygen isotope compositions of soil phosphate (δ(18)O(p)) were suggested recently to be a tracer of phosphorus cycling in soils and plants. Here we present a survey of bioavailable (resin-extractable or resin-P) inorganic phosphate δ(18)O(p) across natural and experimental rainfall gradients, and across soil formed on sedimentary and igneous bedrock. In addition, we analyzed the soil...
متن کاملHolocene hydrological reconstructions from stable isotopes and paleolimnology, Cordillera Real, Bolivia
Multiproxy analyses of sediment cores from Lago Taypi Chaka Kkota (LTCK) Cordillera Real, Bolivia, provide a record of drier conditions following late Pleistocene deglaciation culminating in pronounced aridity between 6.2 and 2.3 ka B.P. Today LTCK is a glacial-fed lake that is relatively insensitive to changes in P}E because it is largely bu!ered from dry season draw-down through the year-roun...

متن کاملClimatic and Environmental Reconstruction Based on Stable Isotopes of Parishan Lake (Iran)
The isotopic documents of lake deposition are suitable potential means for studyingthe intercontinental, environmental and climatic conditions. In order to study theenvironmental and climatic conditions of Parishan area in Fars province in Holocene, a Corewas taken with the length of 2m from the Parishan lake sediment. From this core, kernel timeseries was provided from documents of carbon and ...
متن کاملIdentifying Seasonal Groundwater Recharge Using Environmental Stable Isotopes
In this study, the stable isotope values of oxygen and hydrogen were used to identify the seasonal contribution ratios of precipitation to groundwater recharge in the Hualien River basin of eastern Taiwan. The differences and correlations of isotopes in various water bodies were examined to evaluate the groundwater recharge sources for the Hualian River basin and the interrelations between grou...
